Signs of spring in NYC: Bryant Park’s famed lawn is installed

March 26, 2025

Bryant Park’s seasonal transformation has begun. Last weekend, the landscaping team of the Midtown Manhattan park spent nine hours laying the grass sod of the central lawn, turning the ice skating rink at the Bank of America Winter Village into a green oasis for spring. While not quite ready for use, the lawn will soon be home to move nights, live performances, yoga, and other activities that make New York City so special during the warmer months.

“Spring truly begins in Midtown when the Bryant Park lawn returns. Our team worked overnight, into the morning hours, laying the sod to prepare the lawn to welcome visitors in the warm weather months,” John Zeitoun, Director of Partnerships at Bryant Park Corporation, said.

“It’s one of the few public spaces in New York City that completely transforms with the seasons and in a few short months, the lawn will become the backdrop for summer favorites like Movie Nights, Yoga, Picnic Performances, and so many other outdoor activities open and free to the public.”

The signature lawn, planted with a rye/fescue/bluegrass mix, measures as long as a football field at 300 feet and is 215 feet wide. The grassy expanse is typically open from May through October before turning into the Winter Village ice rink and holiday market until March.

Before Bryant Park’s summer season kicks off in May, the green space will offer fun and free activities all spring long. Starting April 1, enjoy shuffleboard, ping pong, board games, and the art cart, which provides free drawing and craft supplies.

The Reading Room will also return on April 1 with books, magazines, and newspapers to borrow.

“Whether you’re stopping by for a midday break or planning a picnic with friends, we invite you to enjoy this urban oasis in the heart of Midtown,” Zeitoun said.
