The longtime Connecticut home of late Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim sold for the full asking price of $3,250,000. After hitting the market last November, the Roxbury property, which includes a main house, one-bedroom pool house, and a detached garage, found a buyer in just 12 days, according to Klemm Real Estate, the firm with the listing.
Situated on nine acres in the rural town of Roxbury, about a two-hour drive from New York City, the property served as a country retreat for Sondheim, who also called Manhattan home. His Turtle Bay townhouse at 246 East 49th Street sold last November for $7,000,000.
“We were extremely privileged to be chosen to handle such a wonderful home that was cared for by such an extraordinary icon,” Graham Klemm, president of Klemm Real Estate, said. “We are thrilled that the market responded so well to this wonderful property.”
The main house dates to 1792 and has been thoroughly renovated and restored, without losing its historic charm. The living room boasts a cathedral ceiling, wide-plank wood flooring, and a rough-hewn stone fireplace. The kitchen features warm stone tile flooring, wood countertops, and high-end appliances as 6sqft reported.
Additional perks include a sunroom wrapped in windows and a bright music room, which could easily become an additional bedroom. In total, there are three bedrooms in the main house.
Outside, there’s a pool and hot tub, accompanied by a one-bedroom pool house with a stone fire pit and front porch. The property also comes with a two-car garage.
Graham Klemm told Mansion Global the buyer is someone who knows the area and wants to own a larger home in the area. “He was not a rabid Sondheim fan by any stretch. The house just worked best for [the] family.”
