The Dead Rabbit, one of New York City’s most iconic Irish pubs, is kicking off the new year with an all-new concept in the South Street Seaport. Starting January 10, the celebrated bar will transform the Rooftop at Pier 17 into “Joxer’s,” a winter sports bar concept that combines the Dead Rabbit’s Irish charm with a unique menu, striking decor, private dining cottages, bungalows, a full-service bar, and access to the rooftop’s ice skating rink. The pop-up will run seven days a week through early March before transitioning into the pub’s “Paddy’s Not Patty’s” St. Patrick’s Day concept.
The pop-up takes its name from Christy Moore’s folk classic, “Joxer Goes to Stuttgart,” which tells the tale of a group of Irish soccer fans who journey to Germany to cheer on the Republic of Ireland at the 1988 UEFA European Championship.
Joxer’s seeks to recreate that same excitement, offering a vibrant setting for fans to watch their favorite teams, enjoy great drinks, and take part in winter games, all with stunning skyline views as a backdrop.
The new concept follows the Dead Rabbit’s beloved Jingle Jangle holiday pop-up, which transformed its three-floor space on Water Street for another year, featuring festive decor, creative holiday cocktails, and other seasonal touches.
But while Jingle Jangle offered nostalgic decorations and Christmas-themed lighting, Joxer’s will feature neon sports signs, memorabilia from the NHL, NBA, and NFL, and plenty of large-screen TVs, ensuring patrons don’t miss a second of the action.
“While we enjoyed bringing our tried-and-true Jingle Jangle pop-up to a new audience, we are perhaps even more excited to bring a brand new dream to life through our partnership with The Rooftop at Pier 17,” Jack McGarry, managing partner of The Dead Rabbit, said.
“As a passionate sports fan, I have long been looking to celebrate Ireland’s sporting culture in a way that welcomes everyone—Joxer’s will allow our team to flex its creative muscle while delivering on our signature brand of hospitality. And, it’s a great preview of what’s to come down the line with our own sports bar concept, McGarry’s—still in the ideation phase.”
The Tavern and Cottages will provide guests with a secluded, VIP-like experience, complete with a curated menu and full-service food and drinks, reminiscent of private boxes at live sporting events.
At the Bungalows and Ice Rink, patrons can enjoy a more casual, “grab-and-go” atmosphere, welcoming walk-ins and offering the perfect setting for large groups to cheer on their teams together.
Joxer’s drink menu will feature tasteful recreations of sports bar classics, including highballs, boilermakers, hot cocktails, and a wide selection of beer, wine, and Irish spirits.
Featured cocktails include the Joxer’s Irish Coffee (Tullamore D.E.W., hot coffee, salted caramel, and whipped cream), Bonus Points Boilermaker (a pint of Guinness paired with a shot of Teeling Small Batch Whiskey, cacao, and cassis), and Zamboni Negroni (Sipsmith gin, Italian bitters, sweet vermouth, Dunkin’ Donuts cold brew, and rhubarb).
The food menu will offer hearty options such as ham and cheese toasties, Guinness-glazed ribs, baked mac and cheese, corned beef tacos, and the classic Irish spice bag.
The rooftop destination will broadcast all major league games and events, with guests in the Bungalows and Cottages able to request specific channels. Game nights and special-themed events will be announced on a rolling basis.
Additionally, patrons can enjoy arcade games, pool, foosball, and skate across the ice at the Rooftop’s ice skating rink.
