Three new modern penthouses are being added atop The Astor, a landmarked residential building on the Upper West Side built over 100 years ago. The brand-new apartments top one of New York City’s most iconic condominiums, which consists of three interconnected towers on Broadway between West 75th and West 76th Streets. All three penthouses come with private outdoor areas, gas fireplaces, and interiors designed by Pembrooke & Ives. Before being listed publicly, one of the penthouses already found a buyer, who purchased a 3,400 square foot four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom, and a three-bedroom unit below it, in a combo deal last listed for $15.495 million.

The buyer, who according to the New York Post, is an Upper West Side resident moving from a townhouse, purchased the new penthouse in a combo deal with a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom located on the floor below, with plans to combine them into a 5,400-square-foot duplex.

The penthouse also includes 2,000 square feet of outdoor space overlooking Broadway.

Developed in 1901 by William Waldorf Astor, cousin of real estate developer John Jacob Astor IV, the Astor includes three towers, two of which are eight stories and a third at 12 stories, before the creation of the new penthouses. The building offers amenities like a gym, concierge services, and a children’s playroom.

The Astor is located on what was formerly a Dutch dairy farmer’s house Somerindyck House. In 1857, the farm was purchased by New York State Sen. William Kelly who cleared the land and built a single-family home.

Astor acquired the land in 1901, demolishing Kelly’s home and beginning his construction of The Astor Apartments. Astor commissioned architects Clinton and Russell to design the two southern towers of the Astor, which were completed in 1905. In 1914, Astor hired architecture firm Peabody, Wilson & Brown to construct the building’s third, 12-story tower, which was completed in just one year.

In 2012, HFZ Capital bought the property for $119 million and announced plans to convert the building into a 98-luxury condominium. The developer hired Pembrooke & Ives to renovate the building and modernize the units. The lobby was enhanced with a restored mosaic, stone-carved details, and a curated modern art collection.

In 2021, CIM Group took control of the Astor and sales relaunched at the building last fall. Current availabilities start at $1,200,000 for a studio.
