The Whitney Museum of American Art is celebrating 10 years in the Meatpacking District with 10 weeks of special public programs, starting in May. Running through mid-July, “Decade Downtown” will feature engaging activities like dance parties, live music, DJ nights, tours, art-making activities, and more. Visitors can also take advantage of the museum’s Free Friday Nights from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. weekly and Free Second Sundays, which offers free admission on the second Sunday of each month.

Since May 2015, the Whitney Museum has resided in its iconic Renzo Piano-designed building at 99 Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District, contributing to the neighborhood with world-class art, exhibitions, educational programming, and community engagement.
To celebrate its 10-year milestone, “Decade Downtown” will activate the museum and surrounding neighborhood with activities for people of all ages.
Guests can enjoy live music, dance parties, and DJ sets in the museum lobby throughout all 10 weeks, with a pop-up listening lounge by Public Records on the 7th floor in May, where visitors can relax and enjoy music with friends and family.

The celebration will also feature artist-led programs, art-making activities, and more, alongside critically acclaimed exhibitions such as “Amy Sherald: American Sublime,” which opens on April 9, “Christine Sun Kim: All Day All Night,” and “Shifting Landscapes.”
“Decade Downtown” will coincide with the Whitney’s beloved annual celebrations, “Pride” and “West Side Fest.” The museum’s Pride programming, running through June, will feature performances by the NYC Gay Men’s Chorus, queer history walking tours of the Meatpacking District, and more. These free public programs, dedicated to LGBTQ+ artists and communities, offer a safe, inclusive space for all to come together and enjoy American art.
The 10-week celebration will conclude with West Side Fest, a three-day festival running from July 11 to 13, organized by the West Side Cultural Network. The festival will offer free admission and feature special indoor and outdoor programming, family-friendly arts and crafts, performances, and more.
In April 2015, a month before the Whitney officially opened to the public, 6sqft toured the museum’s new home along the High Line. The $422 million structure marked a new chapter for the museum after outgrowing its previous space on the Upper East Side.
